The DVGW supports the gas and water industry in all technical and scientific areas. The main focus of the Association’s work is on safety and hygiene as well as environmental and consumer protection. The DVGW elaborates technical rules designed to promote the technical self-management of the German gas and water industry, thus ensuring the safe and secure supply of gas and water according to the highest international standards. The Association, which was founded in 1859, currently has approximately 14,000 members. The DVGW is free from economic and political influences.

Statement on the current political discussion on how to expand the gas network now in a future-proof manner
Against the background of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EU's gas imports from Russia are under discussion and alternatives are being sought. Only to a lesser extent has it been addressed what needs to be considered in terms of pipelines and transport infrastructure and where the current bottlenecks lie here. This knowledge gap is addressed by the background paper of the BMBF lead project TransHyDE published on March 22, 2022. It identifies the levers for making European gas infrastructures both resilient to supply failures and future-proof for the requirements of climate neutrality, for example in the sense of a hydrogen economy. The DVGW Research Unit at the Engler-Bunte Institute was significantly involved in the preparation of the background paper.
